CNC Milling vs. Turning: When to Use Each Process

Both remove material — but the way they do it changes everything about your part.

Walk into any machine shop and you'll hear two sounds more than any other: the high-pitched whine of a mill and the steady hum of a lathe. Both are CNC-controlled. Both cut metal. But they solve fundamentally different geometry problems.

The Core Difference

Turning spins the workpiece while a stationary cutting tool removes material. Think of it like a potter's wheel for metal. The result is almost always a cylindrical or round shape — shafts, bushings, spacers, threaded fittings.

Milling does the opposite. The workpiece stays still (or moves on a table) while a rotating cutter removes material. This lets you create flat surfaces, pockets, slots, holes in specific patterns, and complex 3D contours.

When to Use Turning

  • Your part is round or cylindrical in nature
  • You need OD/ID features like grooves, threads, or tapers
  • You're making shafts, pins, bushings, or fittings
  • High-volume production of round parts (turning is fast)
  • You need excellent surface finish on cylindrical surfaces

When to Use Milling

  • Your part has flat surfaces, pockets, or slots
  • You need holes in specific patterns or locations
  • The geometry is prismatic (box-like) or has complex 3D contours
  • You're making brackets, housings, plates, or enclosures
  • Multi-sided machining is needed (4-axis or 5-axis work)

The Cost Factor

Turning is generally faster and cheaper per part for round geometry. The setup is simpler, cycle times are shorter, and material waste is often lower. Milling takes more time per feature but handles complexity that turning simply can't.

Many parts need both. A shaft with a keyway, for example, gets turned first, then milled. A housing might be milled from block but have turned bores. At Reliable Manufacturing, we run both Mazak lathes and Haas vertical machining centers, so parts move between processes without leaving the shop.

The Bottom Line

Don't overthink it. If your part is round, start with turning. If it's flat or complex, start with milling. If it's both, your shop will figure out the routing — that's what we do every day.
